Have you met our choice moms?

When we first did a “shout out” to single moms by choice last spring, we were excited to that so many of you chimed into say “hello.” (We hadn’t anticipated, however, to see this post stir up so many emotions for some of you.)

We love to drop by and read these forthright and often funny choice mom blogs.  Along the way, we’ve discovered SO many more blogs launched by women who have given birth solo. We encourage you to stop and say hello to:

  • Mamma Wannabe: Heather is “single, forty, and a new mom to my first child through donor insemination. It’s a monumental, scary and exciting journey…”
  • Creating Motherhood: Having actively tried to become a single mother — which included “13 failed IUI’s, one failed home insem, one canceled IVF, one successful IVF and one miscarriage” — Calliope gave birth to a sweet son (“this boy was worth the wait”) in 2009.
  • Jelly Bean Mama: Jennifer is a 39-year-old choice mom whose daughter has now hit the toddler years.
  • Baby For One: After more than five IUIs, this choice mom gave birth to a sweet daughter.
  • Future Expectations: “After nearly two years, eight anonymous donor inseminations and 3 losses…” this blogger gave birth to twin boys in  August 2010.

Please drop by and say “hi” to these  moms on their blogs and/or Twitter.

If YOU are a Choice Mom, please leave a comment below — with your URL and/or Twitter handle — so we can come and visit you. Thanks!

Fun list. Thanks for sharing. I’m a single mom by choice with two kids ages 4 1/2 and 7. I don’t post very often on my livejournal these days (who has time?) but I tweet plenty of fun kid moments/quotes on my twitter account. :)

I’m a choice mom! I have identical twin girls who are 2.5 now. Just now getting back into the dating thing and it’s hard, especially since my girls ask about ‘daddy’ all the time. Looking forward to hearing others perspectives on things!

  12. Dr. Leah says:

Erin: Welcome! Identical twin girls — too cute! Dating as a solo mom and those “daddy questions”: you’re not alone in wondering how to manage these challenges. We’ll be opening up these conversations (and more) here @Singlemommyhood.. Thanks so much for joining the conversation.

I’m also a single mom by choice! My son is almost a year old and I’m already wondering about how to handle the ‘daddy’ questions. I would love to read about how other people have handled this and get any suggestions.

I am a choice Mom wannabe working my way through my first cycle monitoring for IUI! It is amazing that amount of support I have received so far from family, friends, doctors and my support group! As someone said, “Every baby has a story”, this is the start of my baby’s story….

  16. Rachel Sarah says:

Welcome @Jill and @BB! WE look forward to hearing bout your IU and IVF!

  17. Rachel Sarah says:

@Jennifer T: We hope you’d had a chance to read some of our posts re: the Daddy question, such as: Do you worry about the “Where’s my Daddy?” question?

  18. Latha says:

@Jennifer T, I am a choice mother to an eight year old. One, we read Todd Parr’s book on families when he was really little and we were also part of a fairly diverse social network with same sex parents (both gay and lesbian) and their adopted and bio children. When he was about four, he asked me about his daddy and I talked to him about the biological process of conception and how people make families in different ways and how much I wanted to be a mom and so I got someone’s sperm to make him. After that he has never asked me that question. At that stage, it was not an emotional question for him but a real curiosity for information.

When he was five we moved to a small town which is more traditional in its demographic make up. In fact, when he was around six, I was driving and his friend some place and his little friend asked him: “Where is your daddy?” My son went, “Hmm, Kevin, we are a single parent family. That means there is only one parent!” Kevin was still insistent, “but how did your mom have you without a daddy?” My son started explaining about eggs and sperms and ovaries lol. So it is really okay!

However, I do make an effort to nurture his friendships with my male friends and family members so he would have healthy role models but honestly, I think at this point, he has a such strong sense of self and identity and is very secure in his relationship with me and my family that I am really not too worried about it. As he says, “Mom, you are really great, because you really are my mom and dad.” We in fact joke that all I need is a beard to be his dad!

Finally, I frame the ‘type of family’ into a larger understanding of the choices we make and how we live our lives. That makes it a more affirmative choice than something that needs to be defended. Which is precisely I handle my sole parenting status with others.

We'd love to hear from YOU
