Next up, please meet Stacey MacGlashan (pictured below), author of Just You and Me, Kid. Stacey is a licensed clinical social worker — specializing in therapy with struggling teens and their families — and the choice mom of a two-year-old son. Also, please check out Stacey’s blog: Just You and Me, Kid.

Q: How did your friends and family respond when you told them about your plans to become a single mom by choice?

Stacey: I think some of my friends had sort of been in a “just get on with the kid thing already!” space — because I had talked so much about wanting to be a mom, I was a miserable dater, and I  had toyed for so long with the idea of becoming a single mother by choice.

My parents were a bit more guarded. They were coming at it as parents, so they were concerned and protective. They were worried about how difficult single parenting is, and I know they were even less enthusiastic about giving up the “perfect picture” fantasy than I was. They wanted me to find a great guy and get married!… I think they also were concerned about how much of the burden of co-parenting – or even simply of parenting – would fall to them.

Q: And now that your a mom?….

Stacey: My parents have become my — and certainly my son’s — greatest supporters and champions. They now come at it as grandparents, and I know I don’t have to say more than that to explain just how over the moon in love with my son they are, and how willing to provide for us both in practical and emotional ways. We are incredibly lucky to have them, and to have our entire extended family of relatives and friends! Our lives are abundant with love and support; we are truly blessed.

Q: How did you choose an open donor?

Stacey: I did not go with an open donor. (For those of you who don’t know, an open donor is someone who is willing to have any children created using his sperm contact him when those children reach the age of 18.)

Quite honestly, whether to choose an open donor or not was not high on my priority list of criteria for choosing. I wanted to choose the donor that, by his description and details, seemed the most compatible fit for me and the family I was creating. That was challenging in and of itself!

One lucky grand prize winner will receive a copy of every one of the books above. The contest ends on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at midnight PST. We will choose the winner on Facebook via Random.org.
